My sister, also a faithful resident of Berlin, celebrated her one year anniversary of living in Berlin this week – so we headed to Maxim Restaurant, near Rosa Luxemburg Platz, to celebrate. It was a perfect dinner from start to finish. The dining room is cool, calm and attractively lit. Our waiter was bubbly and friendly, and advised us, as you”ll see in the gallery, that each course on the menu is available with a wine pairing. I loved this idea – the perfect wine for whatever you’re eating already picked out. As we perused the menu, homemade bread and homemade butter were brought out, I think it’s an excellent sign when a restaurant is there making its own butter.

We ordered a wild herb and rocket salad with goats curd and a sea bass carpaccio with red Thai basil and pea shoots as appetisers. Both were fresh and light tasting, though the sea bass could have been a smidge fresher. The matching wines did indeed complement the plates quite perfectly. For mains, rare lamb with green pesto and puy lentils was a highlight, though the absolute pinnacle of the meal was the octopus. It was probably the best octopus I have ever had! The exterior crispy and sweet, the flesh light and fluffy, it was delicious – and the plate was so pretty to boot. The steak tartar was also a winner. There really were no disappointments. To round off the meal, a very strong espresso, and a lemon tart with its matching wine. This was perhaps the only dish that missed the bar – though very good – it was just not as great as the rest.
